What is Fractional General Counsel?

Fractional General Counsel (FGCs) are attorneys who provide part-time or project-based legal services to a group of clients, instead of serving one client as full-time General Counsel.

At Mutual Path Law, our FGCs services provide small businesses and families with flexible, project-based support at a fraction of the cost of a full-time hire. We are dedicated to democratizing legal expertise and putting the law back where it belongs: in the hands of the People.

  • In the old days, only the ultra wealthy could afford to have an on-call lawyer at their disposal for common legal issues and proactive risk management. Everybody else who couldn’t afford a lawyer either went without one and had to wait for a legal problem to balloon before they considered paying high legal fees. We took issue with that, along with a pioneering sector of the legal profession.

Fractional General Counsel are shared among a small batch of clients so that the cost of maintaining a full legal department or general counsel doesn’t fall on just one person or entity, who often is paying a retainer to just keep a lawyer on-call and exclusive to them, even if there’s no legal work to be done.

  • Our services are tailored to your specific phase of growth or current legal needs. Whether you need 5 hours of HR compliance work this month or 20 hours of contract negotiation next month, our fee structure is designed to be predictable and transparent. We eliminate the fear of being billed for "administrative noise," focusing your budget entirely on results.

  • The "fractional" part refers to the cost and time—not the quality of the relationship. By serving a small batch of clients rather than one corporate client or one ultra wealthy family, we ensure that when a crisis or opportunity arises, your "on-call" attorney is already up to speed and ready to act as both your sword and shield.

Mission and Philosophy

We, the lawyering moms of Mutual Path Law, are “writing ourselves into” a profession that has historically excluded working-class people, women of color, and working mothers. We believe justice must be financially equitable and culturally accessible—no matter what.

By ensuring our team mirrors the diversity of our community, we offer representation built on true relatability and lived experience. Our modern approach rejects the racist, classist, and power-imbalanced norms of traditional lawyering in favor of a democratic, client-centered model.

Through personalized options—like collaborative dispute resolution, limited-scope assistance, and preventative membership subscriptions—we shift power back to the people to ensure justice is accessible, not exclusive.

Our Community

Whether you were a part of the greater society or not, you got to write yourself in.
